Zakinthos, Zakynthos, or Zante, whichever way you prefer to spell it, is a picturesque little island lying just off the coast of Greece in the beautiful Ionian Sea. The third largest of the Ionian Islands, Zante is as captivating as it is beautiful.
Juicy citrus trees, fragrant pine forests, luscious vineyards and succulent olive groves encompass this stunning island which in turn is surrounded by sparkling blue waters and brilliant white sands. The north of the island has mountainous peaks while the south has more gentle rolling hills ideal for exploring.
Probably the greatest attraction on Zante holidays would have to be the fantastic beaches, you can choose from lively stretches of golden sands to small secluded coves. Smugglers Cove on Shipwreck Beach is the perfect example of secluded beaches with the added attraction of a real life shipwreck languishing on the beach. As the name suggests, the ship still lies forlornly on the beach here but the only way to reach it is a short swim from your boat. The piercing blue waters and dazzling white sands have helped to make this picture postcard image the most beautiful on the island.
Zante has many sea caves, again only reached by boat with the Blue Caves in the north a dazzling example of how the sunlight reflecting off the sea can create a natural and colourful phenomenon. An experience well worth doing on all Zante holidays; there are also the Keri Caves in the south of the island.
Village tours will help you explore this charming little island and you'll get the chance to experience the local way of life and explore crumbling churches and ancient monasteries. The island was devastated by an earthquake during 1953 which left most of it in tatters however there are still plenty of historic monuments worth visiting.
Loggerhead Turtles breed on some of the beaches at Laganas so tourists are forbidden access to them after sunset, water sports are also restricted around the shoreline here in an effort not to scare the turtles away.
A boat trip over to Marathonisi Island is the best way to get a glimpse of these creatures, as they play just outside the bay here. You can swim from Gerakas Beach to see them but this is only recommended for strong swimmers.
Alikanas and Alikes on the north east coast are the perfect destination for families with safe sandy beaches and calm shallow waters.
The combination of calm clear waters, safe sandy beaches, quaint hidden coves and verdant green countryside that Zante holidays provide sum perfect Greek islands up to a tee.
You might prefer quieter resorts with family friendly beaches, towns with a hectic nightlife, or a wonderful mix of both, there is one thing for sure though,
Zante holidays has it all.
